CHRIS SMALLING claims he didn't see the challenge that left Luke Shaw with a suspected broken leg but is devastated for his team-mate.

 

Shaw was taken off on a stretcher with the horrific-looking injury after going down under a challenge from Hector Moreno.

Smalling described the incident as sad and something that compounded a difficult night for his team as they lost 2-1 in Holland.

 

I didn’t see it [the Luke Shaw injury] but a few of the players witnessed it," he said.

"It was very sad and we are trying to find out how he is.

"We missed that cutting edge in the final third. 

In the first half they scored from their only chance and they punished us on the break. It’s a very disappointing night. 

"We’ve got a lot to learn."
