Louis van Gaal was impressed by Matteo Darmian on debut |
LOUIS VAN GAAL has admitted he 'expected better' from Manchester United after a stuttering 1-0 win over Tottenham.
The Red Devils were helped over the line by an unfortunate goal from Spurs right-back Kyle Walker.
And Louis van Gaal admits, despite the win, he was troubled by the way United handled Mauricio Pochettino's side.
He said: "We’ve seen two pressing teams. We couldn’t cope with their pressing, and Tottenham couldn’t cope with ours. I’m very happy that we’ve won in the end.
"I had expected better from us. Tottenham were pressing and we didn’t have the time to pass. We have to improve on that."
However, Van Gaal did take some positives from the game, mainly the debuts of Memphis Depay and Matteo darmian.
He added: "I said to Memphis Depay that he doesn’t have to play too eagerly and with too much passion, and that counts for the whole team.
"But it is always – the first time you play at Old Trafford it s always difficult, but I liked the performance especially from Matteo Darmian."
