DANIEL STURRIDGE will return to Liverpool in a fortnight and is targeting a lasting return from his injury problems against Manchester United at the start of September.
Sturridge has spent the summer in the USA following surgery on his hip but he is nearing the end of his rehabilitation programme there.
He is expected to be back at Melwood before the end of the month, with Liverpool pencilling in his long-awaited comeback after the international break in September.
That would put Sturridge in contention to make Brendan Rodgers' squad for the heavyweight showdown with United at Old Trafford on September 12 and signal the fight for places in earnest.
Liverpool have reinforced with £32.5million Christian Benteke and £29m Roberto Firmino in the summer and Sturridges faces a battle to claw back his status as the club's main striker.
Sturridge managed just 18 appearances for Liverpool last term as his campaign was decimated by thigh, calf and, latterly, a hip problem for which he had an operation in the States in May.
