Gareth Southgate believes first-team football is more important than a big-money move for the pair |
ENGLAND Under-21 boss Gareth Southgate has urged John Stones and Saido Berahino not to jump at the first chance of a big-money move.
Stones has handed in a transfer request at Everton to try and force through a move to Chelsea, while Berahino, 22, has done likewise amid prying eyes from Tottenham.
Southgate has worked with the pair at international level and is concerned that leaving their respective clubs could harm their chances of playing regular first-team football.
And while he understands the lure of playing for one of the Premier league's bigger clubs, the former England defender thinks regular playing time is more important.
"The key initially is that they need to play," he said.
"So both of those players are currently at clubs where they are playing regularly, which is a great position to be in.
"With the senior team, Roy will want as many of his players playing Champions League football as possible.
"That’s where they test themselves against the very best.
"But with the younger players, they need to play regularly and that should be high on their consideration.
"I have seen what happens when players are not playing regularly and there’s a moment their development dwindles and they don’t progress"
