JOSE MOURINHO was given a pre-season injury scare last night.
The Chelsea boss fears Gary Cahill could have broken his nose after scoring a late headed leveler against Barcelona which saw him cop a punch in the face for his troubles while Diego Costa was troubled with a hamstring strain.
Both will be assessed ahead of Sunday’s Community Shield match with Arsenal at Wembley after the Premier League champions beat the Liga side on penalties here in Washington DC after it finished 2-2 after 90 minutes.
Mourinho also launched a blistering attack on Rafa Benitez after the wife of the Real Madrid boss moaned to La Region newspaper that her husband was always being forced to clean up the Portuguese’s mess.
Benitez has followed in Mourinho’s footsteps at Chelsea, Inter Milan and now Real – but the Chelsea boss brilliantly cut his old rival down to size.
"The lady is a bit confused, with all respect. I'm not laughing, because her husband went to Chelsea to replace Roberto Di Matteo and he went to Real Madrid and replaced Carlo Ancelotti, “ said Mourinho.
"The only club where her husband replaces me was at Inter Milan, where in six months he destroyed the best team in Europe at the time.
"And for her also to think about me and to speak about me, I think the lady needs to occupy her time and if she takes care of her husband's diet she will have less time to speak about me."
The Blues started well in the last of their three match tour with Nemanja Matic and Kurt Zouma both going close before Hazard stole the show with a superb solo strike, the brilliant Belgian superbly skipping past four challenges before brilliantly slotting home.
A crowd of over 70,000 were loving every minute and were witnessing Chelsea’s strongest display of their three match North American tour.
Luis Suarez , typically, was causing the Blues backline plenty of problems but man of the match Thibaut Courtois was bang on his game. A brilliant low stop kept out the Uruguayan before Costa wasted a great chance just before the break to make it two.
Nothing could stop the former Liverpool striker from levelling on 52 minutes though. His touch and awareness caused panic and with Cahill losing his balance, Suarez cooly lobbed the ball over Courtois and into the net despite Zouma’s efforts.
And when Sandro made it two with a sweet run and curling finish, the European Champions finally had their noses in front.
Chelsea though never gave up and were rewarded with 10 minutes left . Willian’s free-kick was poorly dealt with by the Barca backline and Cahill bravely rose through a crowd to send the match to penalties, the England defender bagging a punch in the face for his troubles.
Just as in Charlotte on Saturday against PSG, the Blues’ spot-kicks were on the money as was Courtois. His save from Gerard Pique was world class allowing Remy to step up and do the rest.
“No-one was worried about winning or losing. It is like training for both of us. We were looking for the best intensity, it was 2-2 could have been 4-4. The penalties mean nothing but it’s something nice for the people, “ said Mourinho.
"Barcelona are training like us and without their best player (Messi) who is still on holiday. We have a small pre-season, we need matches so I said thanks to Luis Enrique for giving us a great training session.
“We are calm, we have a good squad. We will defend our title in the Premier League and hope to do well in Europe."
