<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
The Scotland international has been tipped for a £12million move to Sheffield Wednesday or Middlesbrough this month but proved his worth with a second-half winner for the Championship side.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
Ben Marshall put Rovers in front with an early penalty before Mark Byrne equalised for the home side after Chris Brown had been sent off for the visitors.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
Marshall had given the visitors the best possible start when he won and scored a penalty after just six minutes following a push in the back from defender Scott Barrow.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
But Blackburn's ecstasy quickly evaporated when Brown was sent off for a horror challenge on Medy Elito which left the midfielder unable to continue.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
The red card allowed Newport to get a foothold in the contest and they were soon level thanks to a stunning strike from Byrne from the edge of the area.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
Blackburn boss Paul Lambert called upon Rhodes for the second half and he was soon causing problems for the Newport defence.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
The 25-year-old then got the winner with a superb header from Tom Lawrence's free kick from the left to book their fourth-round clash with Oxford United.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
Newport's misery was then compounded when goalkeeper Joe Day was sent off in the final moments for a foul on Craig Conway.</div>

</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
The Brentford goalkeeper bizarrely punched straight into his own net under little pressure from Grant Leadbitter's 61st-minute corner with Daniel Ayala claiming a final touch on the line.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
And an incredible, if sometimes fortunate, second tier record equalling ninth straight clean sheet helped Boro move six points clear at the top.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
This was far from their finest hour this term but could be one of their most important wins.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
"Sometimes when you are at the top of the table this thing happens," admitted manager Aitor Karanka. "We've been very lucky.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
"After the first half the score could have been completely different as they had three good chances and we made a few mistakes."</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
Boro had looked unusual out of sorts at the back without Ben Gibson and could have fallen behind on numerous occasions early on.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
Alan Judge shot just wide from Lasse Vibe's pass while Ayala was lucky to survive a major mistake after he slipped letting in the Danish forward before his goalkeeper Dimi Konstantopoulos came to his rescue.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
At the other end Boro could have taken the lead when an Adam Clayton effort deflected straight into the arms of Button while Dave Nugent was also denied from a powerful effort following Stewart Downing's pass.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
This was a decent game where both sides played their part but Brentford will be frustrated they could not make the most of their first half moments with Harlee Dean glanced wide from a Judge cross.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
At the other end, Toumani Diagouraga, who was denied a move to Rangers this week, could have given Middlesbrough the opening goal though, with a poor back pass that Nugent seized on before Button came to Brentford's rescue.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
The on-song Judge nearly put the Bees in front before the break first striking the post before nearly catching Konstantopoulos out.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
Brentford dominated the opening moments in the second half with Maxime Colin denied by Konstantopoulos and Judge also going close again.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
But the hosts were architects of their own downfall due and there was no way back into this contest for them after Button's error.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
"We were marginally the better side," said Brentford boss Dean Smith. "Our goalkeeper made a mistake but everyone makes mistakes."</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
<strong>Sheffield Wednesday 3 Bolton Wanderers 2</strong></div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
Gary Hooper showed last night why Sheffield Wednesday would love to keep the striker who is on loan from Norwich. Hooper, nearing the end of his stay at Hillsborough, scored twice after Bolton were rocked by a stunning goal from Fernando Forestieri.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
The Italian fired in from more than 30 yards after 14 minutes, but Bolton levelled five minutes later through Gary Madine, who left Hillsborough in the summer. Hooper restored Wednesday's lead from close-range seven minutes after the interval but Bolton hit back again through David Wheater before Hooper drilled in his fourth goal in five games 13 minutes fom the end.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
<strong>Huddersfield 5 Charlton 0</strong></div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
Karel Fraeye's future as relegation-threatened Charlton's manager looked increasingly precarious last night as their winless run was extended to 10 matches by a 4-0 defeat at Huddersfield.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
Former Addicks defender Mark Hudson headed the home side in front, and Nakhi Wells pinched a second from close-range late in the first half.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
After the interval, Jamie Paterson strode through unchallenged to drive in a third from 20 yards, before midfielder Duane Holmes scored his first senior goal with the help of a deflection.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
<strong>Nottingham Forest 1, Birmingham City 1</strong></div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
Matt Mills sprung from villain into hero to frustrate Birmingham in their bid to climb back into the Championship play-off places in a feisty Midlands derby.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
Forest skipper Mills and his defensive colleagues were guilty of a defensive lapse which allowed Spaniard Jon Toral to head home his fifth goal of the season in the 24th minute, but he made amends by rising to meet David Vaughan's free kick with a firm header six minutes later.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
The Reds' hopes of a sixth win in seven home matches were dealt a blow late on when Vaughan was red-carded for a high challenge on Clayton Donaldson.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
<strong>Ipswich 2 Leeds 1</strong></div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
SOULEYMANE Doukara recorded the fastest goal of the season so far when he took advantage of a loss of control in front of goal by Jonathan Douglas to fire Leeds ahead after just 12 seconds at Ipswich.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
But the hosts fought back thanks to a 50th-minute equaliser from Luke Chambers, who headed home Ryan Fraser's cross.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
<strong>Wolves 3 Fulham 2</strong></div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
Michal Zyro scored twice on the first 13 minutes on his home debut to give Wolves control against Fulham in their first match since selling Benik Afobe to Bournemouth.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
Lasse Vigen Christensen reduced the arrears for Fulham after Poland international Zyro's double but Matt Doherty made it 3-1 to the home side with a 30-yard rocket just after half-time.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
<strong>Derby County 1 Reading 1</strong></div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
Bogey team Reading looked to have put a serious dent in Derby's title challenge holding them to a 1-1 draw despite the loss of top scorer Nick Blackman to the Rams.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
Reading had won on their past four visits to the iPro Stadium, most notably on the last day of last season costing Derby a play-off place.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
Derby did take the lead after 10 minutes with their first serious foray into Reading territory.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
Blackman, who recently swapped Reading for Derby in a £2.5 million deal, won his new side a corner. Tom Ince fired the ball in and centre half Jason Shackell arrived unmarked to side foot home from close range.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
It could have got worse for the away team as Blackman latched on to Lee Grant's long clearance only to misfire.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
Reading levelled the scores seven minutes before the break as Hal Robson-Kanu fired in a tempting cross that was met by US international Danny Williams who beat Grant with a bullet header.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
<strong>MK Dons 0 Burnley 5</strong></div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
Joey Barton netted his first goal for Burnley as they thrashed MK Dons 5-0. Sam Vokes doubled the lead just 28 seconds after the break before Andre Gray headed in. Matt Lowton then drove in before Dons defender Antony Kay was dismissed, with George Boyd also scoring as Clarets got their first away win in four.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
<strong>Rotherham United 2 Brighton and Hove Albion 0</strong></div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
Danny Ward's second goal in five games and a late strike by Matt Derbyshire made it eight games in a row without a win for fading Brighton and Hove Albion.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
Ward clinched the points for relegation-threatened Rotherham with a neat 45th minute finish as Brighton's miserable form continued, with the Seagulls also losing their unbeaten away record in the league this season.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
Brighton's best chance fell to new £1.5million signing Anthony Knockaert, but Millers keeper Lee Camp brilliantly saved his second half free-kick.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
<strong>Blackburn 1 QPR 1</strong></div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
A LATE Hope Akpan header helped Blackburn secure a 1-1 draw in a drab clash with QPR at Ewood Park.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
Leroy Fer slotted home Junior Hoilett's cross in the first half for the visitors and that looked liken being enough until Akpan popped up at the back post and latched onto a long throw-in to rescue a deserved point with just five minutes remaining.</div>

<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
Brighton's afternoon had started badly when on-loan Manchester United striker James Wilson was filmed being sick during the warm-up.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
The forward - who has been suffering from illness over the last week - was given the all-clear to start but was unable to break Albion's alarming goal-drought that now stretches to over six-and-a-half hours.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
That meant the 32nd miscue by Wolverhampton-born Goldson - who admits he turned against Wolves as a youngster after growing tired of hearing dad Winston talk about the club - proved decisive and extended his side's winless streak to six games.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
Frustrated Brighton manager Chris Hughton said: "Things aren't going for us the way they were earlier in the season and defensive mistakes are costing us. But Connor will be better for this experience and has done well in the last two games."</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
He added: "I spoke to James and he said he felt fine.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
"It's a cold. It's a combination of that and the volumes of games he's been involved in. He's a player who has gone from being involved in a Manchester United squad not playing so many games. But he was fine to play."</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
Goldson diverted Jordan Graham's low cross past team-mate David Stockdale to put Wolves ahead.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
And Kenny Jackett's side held on after Brighton increased the pressure after the break and came close to levelling when right-back Bruno crashed a long-range shot against the bar.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
Wolves manager Jackett said: "In terms of a week's work, we've got three clean sheets and nine points out of nine, although each game has been different in terms of how we've set out.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
"I'm very pleased with the players' effort, commitment and character because we needed that to try to negate a very good side."</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
"I feel we do need to give the players we have some help. We can't stand still. We always want to be trying to improve and if we can do that, yes, we can start to look towards the top of the table."</div>

</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
IN the end, the quality of the football came up a little short. There was no lack of effort from the hosts but the superior skills and speed of Chesterfield’s League One players saw them comfortably overwhelm FC United.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
But if the match had been decided on the quality of the passion in the protest, there would be only one team in it.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
In fact, forget just tackling Walsall in the second round, this lot would be marching on to Wembley.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
FC United is a club founded on protest and anger, and a hatred of the Glazer’s vision of Manchester United. And a decade on it is clear that satisfying their revolutionary spirit shows no sign of dying.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
There were chants at Malcolm Glazer; persistent, indelicate but firm instructions for BT; banners about the FA leaving no scope for misinterpretation, protests outside the ground and more inside.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
Halfway through a first half in which they were trailing 2-0, there were even taunts from the vocal majority on the terrace lambasting the Main Stand for failing to add their voice.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">FC United protest against the fixture being rescheduled before the game</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
The focus for the ire of the locals was principally the scheduling of this match as a live broadcast on Monday night – something which goes against the grain of why this club was formed in the first place, namely the sanctity of the three o’clock Saturday kick-off for starters.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
That and not being told what to do by anyone, ever.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
Smaller battles have been won like the £9 ticket price when the FA rules urge them to charge £10 and in manager Karl Marginson refusing BT’s request to place a camera in the home dressing room. With Chesterfield looking down from 78 places above them the size of the task was significant – especially with FC United having lost six straight in National League North.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
Marginson had suggested the pressure of performing in their new home – the redevelopment here at Broadhurst Park cost £6.3million and was opened in May – has affected his players.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
The distraction of the Cup would help. If it did it was for only seven minutes before FC United went behind, shredded by the electric pace of Sylvain Ebanks-Blake who skinned Chris Lynch on the left flank with a searing burst and pull-back for Gboly Ariyibi.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
Things got worse soon after when Chesterfield doubled their lead after 12 minutes. This time it was Jay O’Shea who sprung Dan Jones down the left flank, who whipped a cross to the near post for Lee Novak to score.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
Going two-nil down did nothing to stem the volume from the terrace at the St Mary’s Road End with an endless chant to “Bring On United” echoing impressively through the break – the 200 or so extra protesters finally coming in from outside.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
But Chesterfield put the result beyond doubt after 68 minutes, Rai Simon’s latching on to a through pass from Sam Morsy and slipping the ball under goalkeeper David Carnell.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
Ollie Banks added a fourth with the crowd barely skipping a beat in their instructions to the FA.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
But in the 90th minute a late consolation header from Luke Ashworth was exactly what they deserved.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
Here there were corporate giants – even ones who had paid £67,500 for the privilege – to be baited live on their own broadcast. Passionate and admirable and free to concentrate on the league.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
FC United (4-5-1): Carnell; Brownhill, Stott, Lynch, Wright; Fallon (Daniels 46), Thurston, Sheridan, Ashworth, Lindfield (Patterson 46); Greaves. Goal: Ashworth 90.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
Chesterfield (4-4-2): Lee; Talbot, Evatt, Wood, Jones; Ariyibi, Morsy (Raglan 72), Herd (Banks 55), O’Shea; Ebanks-Blake (Simons 56), Novak. Goals: Ariyibi 7, Novak 12, Simons 68, Banks 87.</div>
