Proton therapy saved our girl's sight

But after four trips to their GP in Drighlington, Leeds and with the swelling showing no signs of going away, the two-year-old toddler was referred to an eye specialist.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The doctor immediately suspected that the swelling was more sinister than an infection and ordered an MRI scan, telling Stephanie, 26, that he thought the swelling was cancerous.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He was right. On July 4 Myla was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare soft tissue cancer.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“We got the shock of our lives,” says Tony, 29, an electrician. “We honestly thought it was just some sort of infection.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Rhabdomyosarcoma (more commonly known as RMS) is a sarcoma, a rare type of cancer that develops in the supporting tissues of the body, such as bone, muscle or cartilage.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
RMS is the most common of the soft tissue sarcomas in children. Tumours develop from muscle or fibrous tissue and can grow in any part of the body but are most commonly found in the head and neck, the bladder or genital area.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Fewer than 60 children are diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma in the UK each year and most of them are below the age of 10.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In Myla’s case the tumour was lodged in the muscle behind her right eye. Although tests showed that the cancer had not spread, it had grown to such an extent that her eye was being distorted and her cheek appeared swollen.</div>

<section class="text-description"></section><section class="text-description">In September. a scan showed that Myla had responded well to chemotherapy and it was decided that proton therapy would be a good option to eradicate the rest of the tumour.</section><section class="text-description">Proton beam therapy is a type of radiotherapy that uses high energy beams to destroy cancerous cells. It is more focused than traditional radiation therapy which fires beams at the whole body and can cause significant damage to patients.</section><section class="text-description">Only 50 proton beam units are in use worldwide and treatment can cost up to £100,000.</section><section class="text-description">Some proton treatments are available on the NHS but only on specific parts of the body.</section><section class="text-description">A similar device was used to treat Ashya King, the six-year-old boy who sparked an international manhunt when he disappeared from Southampton General Hospital in 2014.</section><section class="text-description">His parents had taken him for proton therapy in Prague for a brain tumour. </section><section class="text-description"> </section><section class="text-description">The family left the UK on September 11 for the University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute in Jacksonville.</section><section class="text-description">Stephanie had to return home two weeks later because she was so close to her due date with the couple’s second child.</section><section class="text-description">“That was devastating,” says Tony. “Getting the news about Myla’s illness was bad enough but being separated was torture.</section><section class="text-description">“We’d got through the tough times by staying together as a family but it was the only thing Stephanie could do with our new baby due so soon. She had to go back to the UK for the birth.</section><section class="text-description">“We’d go on Skype every day so Stephanie could see Myla, and speak to each other on the phone whenever we could. It was so hard.”</section><section class="text-description">The proton therapy was difficult for Myla. A special mask had to be made for her to keep her head completely still and she was given a general anaesthetic for each session of which she had 27 over an eight-week period.</section><section class="text-description">Although Myla’s treatment finished on October 28, Myla and Tony couldn’t get a flight home until November 3, two days after Stephanie’s due date.</section><section class="text-description">In the end, their son Mackson was born on November 4 with Tony missing the birth by one hour as their flight had landed in Manchester that morning and he and Myla were stuck in traffic.</section><section class="text-description">“Steph and I have never been so happy to see each other, and seeing my baby boy there was just the welcome-home present Myla and I needed,” says Tony.</section><section class="text-description">"Poor Steph had to go into the hospital alone but we left as a family of four and that’s all that matters.”<br />

</section><section class="text-description">Back at home, Myla’s chemo treatment continued until December 21. A scan is due to take place this Friday to find out whether the treatment has been successful.</section><section class="text-description">Tony says: “We just need to keep everything crossed but the doctors are hopeful.</section><section class="text-description">“A scan before we went to the US for the proton treatment showed that almost all of Myla’s tumour had gone, thanks to the chemotherapy. It’s hoped that the proton treatment will have got rid of it completely.</section><section class="text-description">“Little by little we’re getting our Myla back. She has periods where she peps up a little between treatments and it’s so good to see her energy levels up again.</section><section class="text-description">“She’s amazed us at just how resilient she is. At the start of last summer she was only two-and-a-half and we had no idea anything was wrong. Six months later we’ve been through so much and even been halfway around the world for treatment, but we’re beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel – 2016 can only get better.”</section></div>

Our European neighbours habitually wear sunglasses but unfortunately 66 per cent of UK adults don’t. </section><section class="text-description">And if you ski without sunglasses you risk ‘snow blindness’, an acute corneal burn causing severe pain, watering and blurred vision. Sunbed users should always wear protective goggles as the UV exposure can cause longterm damage and growths in the eyes as well as skin cancer. </section><section class="text-description"><strong>REMOVE MAKE-UP AT NIGHT </strong></section><section class="text-description">Keeping the eyes and the surrounding skin clean is vital to help reduce the risk of eye infections. Research has shown that 52 per cent of eye problems treated by GPs and opticians are infections, many of which could have been avoided with good eye hygiene.</section><section class="text-description">Going to sleep without removing make-up means foreign particles can come into contact with the eye, causing irritation, redness or even infl ammation. </section><section class="text-description"> </section><section class="text-description"><strong>WASH HANDS REGULARLY </strong></section><section class="text-description">We all touch our eyes without even realising it, to rub or adjust a contact lens or because we are feeling tired. Hands pick up germs and dirt from public transport, increasing the risk of eye infections. Consider how many germs are on your hands from any outing – it is estimated that there are between 10,000 and 10 million  bacteria on each hand, so always wash them before handling contact lenses or touching the eyes. </section><section class="text-description"><strong>DON’T MIX TAP WATER AND CONTACT LENSES </strong></section><section class="text-description">Tap water can contain a parasite called acanthamoeba, which can cause rare but severe corneal infections seen almost exclusively in contact lens wearers, and it can be very difficult to treat. Swimming and showering while wearing contacts should be avoided for the same reason. </section><section class="text-description"><strong>REMOVE LENSES AT BEDTIME </strong></section><section class="text-description">If you don’t observe the rules about removing contact lenses at night you risk developing blood vessels on your cornea which can threaten sight and cause serious infections. </section><section class="text-description"><strong>LIMIT SCREEN TIME</strong></section><section class="text-description">We are all so reliant on computers, tablets and smartphones that our eyes work hard to focus on small screens, often with moving images. This can disturb vision as eyes dry out, causing eye strain. Lighting up can be a significant risk in causing circulatory blockages, macular degeneration, severe loss of vision and diabetic eye disease. It can also cause circulatory diseases which can affect the arteries and veins of the eye, leading to sudden blindness. </section><section class="text-description"><strong>DRINK WATER AND EAT MORE OILY FISH</strong></section><section class="text-description">Dehydration can lead to dry, sore eyes so drink plenty of water during the day. Omega 3 fatty acids may also be beneficial for the eyes. Stephen Souter, 63, has suffered ‘indescribable’ pain after his contact lens triggered a rare infection in which a parasite burrowed in to his eyeball.</div>

He now has to use eye drops every two hours to prevent his eye from BURSTING.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The disease slowly destroyed his cornea and has left him blind in one eye, in what he and his wife have described as a ‘nightmare.’</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The highly sensitive cornea is the clear window at the front of the eye and has the highest density of pain receptors in the body.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Mr Souter has been diagnosed with Acanthamoeba Keratitis, an infection caused by a microscopic amoeba found in water both outdoors and in our homes.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Most varieties of the organism are usually harmless but some can cause a serious eye disease if they infect the cornea.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Mr Souter, from Braunton, Devon, said: "It's been an absolute nightmare from start to finish.</div>

Mr Souter first noticed a problem last January when a redness developed in his eye and he was in so much agony he was kept awake all night.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He went to his GP the following day who referred him to an eye clinic, believing it was glaucoma as his father had suffered from the disease.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The hospital diagnosed an eye infection and prescribed eye drops but the pain increased.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Mr Souter went back to his GP weeks later and was referred back to the eye clinic in nearby Barnstaple but he was misdiagnosed with HERPES.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After being prescribed more eye drops, he was asked to return a week later but the pain got even worse and a small circle then appeared on the surface of his eye.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The eye clinic eventually diagnosed AK - which is notoriously difficult to spot in its early stages - and Mr Souter still had some blurred vision at that stage.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The vast majority of victims - some 85 per cent - are people who wear contact lenses where poor lens hygiene increases the risk.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Around one in 50,000 contact lens wearers in the UK are affected each year by the condition but only a minority of them lose their sight.</div>

In March, after being told there were no hospital beds available, his wife Tess - a nurse - offered to treat him at home with the extremely potent eye drops.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
At one point she was putting them into his eye every 30 minutes for 48 hours.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Mr Souter recalled: "We had no sleep. That was a nightmare - every time she came up the stairs she had to shine a light in my eye and the pain was indescribable."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He was then referred to Exeter Hospital where a specialist prescribed slow release morphine tablets, which he has been taking since April.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He is also using two types of eye drops - Polyhexanide, which he applies EVERY two hours and Brolene, just before bed.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The drops are used to keep the pressure off the eye because if it gets too high, his eye could burst.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Tragically, the sight in his left eye disappeared completely in the summer.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He now faces another year of partial sight and treatment with the drops to kill off the infection before he is eligible for a cornea transplant - something he admits is bringing him down.</div>

He said: "The trouble is, I get depressed with it. It drags you down because I'm on morphine as well which is a painkiller so all in all, it's affected my whole life because I have not got sight in one eye. </div>

"So I'm walking around with one eye and they don't even guarantee that I'll get it back."</div>

As well as experiencing excruciating pain and blindness, his life has been halted too and his wife is often left to help him do basic things.</div>

He said: "I can drive but only in the night and I don't drive long distances - my wife drives me. I only drive round the village.</div>

"I can work but it has an influence on my work and what I do. Overall, it's had a massive effect on my life, I'm just hoping to see the end of it."</div>

Mrs Souter, 61, said: "It has been a never-ending, living nightmare, which came totally out of the blue.</div>

"Now he has no confidence - I drive us everywhere. We are happy with each other's company but it's turned our life upside down."</div>

Mr Souter caught the infection from daily disposable contact lenses, which he had been using for around three years.</div>

"They were daily disposables which I used as daily disposables," he said.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"You're not supposed to swim, shower or sleep wearing them, and I did none of those things.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"Apparently you can pick this bug up from any water. There is a two million to one chance, and I was the unlucky one.”</div>

"I would certainly warn anyone who is thinking of using contact lenses to consider the risks because it has completely ruined my life."</div>

</section><section class="text-description">More than 300,000 cataract removal procedures are carried out in the UK each year.</section><section class="text-description">Like neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, a hallmark of the condition is the misfolding and clumping together of crucial proteins, which in cataracts are known as crystallins.</section><section class="text-description">Experts think that shortly after birth all the fibre cells which form the eye’s lenses lose the ability to make new proteins. So those you have as an adult are the same as those you are born with.</section><section class="text-description">In order for lenses to function properly, the reservoir of crystallins must maintain transparency and flexibility while the eye muscles stretch and relax the lens, to allow us to focus on objects at different distances.</section><section class="text-description"> </section><section class="text-description">Crystallins are helped by proteins known as chaperones, which act like antifreeze, keeping them soluble for decades.</section><section class="text-description">Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, scanned 2,450 chemicals and found one named “compound 29” which melted away cataracts that had formed in human lens tissue and mice. </section><section class="text-description">They said it is the most likely candidate to be sufficiently soluble for use in cataract-dissolving eye drops.</section><section class="text-description">Tests confirmed compound 29 significantly stabilised crystallins and prevented them from forming into destructive amyloids.</section><section class="text-description"> </section><section class="text-description"></section><section class="text-description"><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

CONJUNCTIVITIS</h3>

This common condition causes redness and inflammation of the thin layer of tissue that covers the front of the eye. Symptoms include itchiness and watery eyes and sometimes a sticky coating on the lashes.</div>

It is the result of either a bacterial or viral infection, an allergic reaction or the eye coming into direct contact with substances that irritate the tissue such as shampoo.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Symptoms should clear up within a couple of weeks without treatment but antibiotic eye drops can be used to clear a bacterial infection. Allergic conjunctivitis can be treated with anti-allergy medications such as antihistamines.</div>

Avoid wearing contact lenses until the symptoms have cleared up.</div>

STYES</h3>

These are small, painful abscesses that occur on the inside or outside of the eyelid. They are caused by a bacterial infection and most of us get them at least once or twice in our lifetime.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
They are usually visible on the surface of the skin but can appear deeper inside the eyelid. They are commonly confused with a chalazion which is a firm, round, smooth bump usually some distance from the edge of the lid.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
They are caused by oily glandular secretions that were unable to reach the lid surface as the duct was blocked by debris. Both styes and chalazia are usually harmless and rarely affect the eyeball or sight.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Styes often get better without any treatment within a week or two, particularly after they burst and release pus but don’t try to burst a stye yourself. Use over-the-counter painkillers to manage any discomfort.</div>

DRY EYES</h3>

A common and uncomfortable problem which occurs when the eyes do not make enough tears or when the tears evaporate too quickly. This causes a disruption to the tear film or lipid layer, the thin layer of tear that protects the eyes.</div>

The eyes then feel dry, become inflamed, red, swollen, irritated and itchy. Complications of dry eyes include conjunctivitis and ulceration of the cornea. Dry eyes can be a temporary condition, perhaps aggravated by your surroundings, or a symptom of something else.</div>

Excessive computer or smartphone use, not blinking enough when concentrating, driving long distances, hot and windy weather, wearing contact lenses, a dry atmosphere (such as central heating) or being dehydrated can all be to blame.</div>

Thyroid problems, allergies, some immune disorders (such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus), skin disease around the eyes and vitamin A deficiency can all make you more prone to getting dry eyes.</div>

BLEPHARITIS</h3>

An inflammation of the eyelids with numerous causes, from bacterial infections to a blockage of the glands around the eyelashes. It is a common problem that in its mildest form often goes unnoticed and is estimated to affect one in three people.</div>

It is a chronic condition that often has no single identifiable cause but those who suffer with dry skin or dandruff are often more prone. There is a link between blepharitis and meibomian gland dysfunction, where the glands along the eyelids that produce oils to form the tears become blocked.</div>

Symptoms can include swollen, scaly, crusty or sticky eyelids and itchy or dry/burning eyes. Optometrists can easily diagnose blepharitis and prescribe a treatment.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There is now an excellent range of special eyelid cleaners that, in conjunction with a warm compress such as Eyebag (£20, eyebagcompany.com) – an eye mask that is heated in the microwave – help liquify the hardened waxy gland blockages.</div>

Initially the treatment will be intensive (two or three times a day) and, as the condition isn’t curable, will require ongoing management, perhaps two or three times a week.</div>
