Richards, 27, only joined Villa last summer after loan stint at Fiorentina during 2014/15.
The Manchester City academy product has been targeted as an alternative to Arsenal right-back Mathieu Debuchy.

The Daily Mirror claim Sunderland have already had a bid for Richards rejected but that manager Sam Allardyce is determined to get his man.
Meanwhile, Steven Fletcher's future at Sunderland has been cast into doubt, with reports in France claiming Marseille want to land the Scot.
Both La Provence and L'Équipe claim Ligue 1 side Marseille are monitoring striker Fletcher's situation and could make an offer before 11pm.
Sky Sports report that West Brom's Peter Odemwingie is another option for the southern France club.
Fletcher has scored just four goals for the Black Cats this season and last four the net on 1 November in a 6-2 loss at Everton.
