Starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, the touching story of good girl Sandy and bad boy Danny's high school romance was a cinema smash in 1978, becoming that year's highest-grossing movie.
Nearly 40 years later, its feelgood power and great songs like You're the One That I Want and Greased Lightning mean it is still watched on video or DVD in homes up and down the country while millions have also gone to live stage show versions.
The results suggest Britons have a particular fondness for feel-good movies

Second, according to the 2,000 British adults who were questioned by OnePoll.com, is Back To The Future, closely followed by 80s romance Dirty Dancing and Christmas favourites Home Alone and Love Actually.
Indiana Jones and the Raiders Of The Lost Ark came sixth, followed by the 1990s favourite Titanic, which catapulted stars Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio into the limelight, at seventh.

Jurassic Park, Mary Poppins and Toy Story com-Indiana Jones and the Raiders Of The Lost Ark came sixth, followed by the 1990s favourite Titanic, which catapulted stars Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio into the limelight, at seventh.
Jurassic Park, Mary Poppins and Toy Story completed the top ten.
A spokesman for market researchers OnePoll said: "The results suggest Britons have a particular fondness for feelgood movies. Interestingly, the most popular films are relatively old - perhaps because they evoke a sense of nostalgia, reminding respondents of their childhoods.
"This might explain why movie studios invest so much money in remakes and sequels as seen with the new Star Wars movie and the forthcoming Ghostbusters reboot."

Other popular films to feature in the top 50 include The Shawshank Redemption, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Jaws and The Lion King.
At 50th, the last on the list was 1939's Gone With The Wind, perhaps because it is among the longest films ever made by Hollywood at three hours 58 minutes.
Despite recent box office misfires Johnny Depp is our favourite male actor.
Dames Helen Mirren and Judi Dench are the most popular film female stars.
