MANCHESTER UNITED look set to make a British transfer record bid for Real Madrid star James Rodriguez, according to reports.
Rodriguez has endured a tough season with Madrid after falling out with former boss Rafa Benitez, and he has made just seven league starts.
The 24-year-old was left out of new coach Zinedine Zidane's first starting XI against Deportivo La Coruna, sparking speculation his time in the Spanish capital could be coming to an early end.
And Goal claim United have been alerted to James’ potential availability by the player’s agent Jorge Mendes.
Any move for the forward would see United spend in excess of the £59.7 million they paid to land Angel Di Maria from Madrid in 2014.
United boss Louis van Gaal has been searching for extra fire-power with the Red Devils currently struggling in front of goal.
Van Gaal has also been linked with moves for James' Madrid team-mates Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo.
But Madrid’s transfer ban looks set to provide a major obstacle in his pursuit of both Ronaldo and Bale.
The Spanish club have been banned from registering players between next month and the summer of 2017 for breaching regulations governing the transfer of players under the age of 18.
However James could still be available as his current slump makes him more sellable.
The Colombian joined Madrid from Monaco in an £61m deal in August 2014 after starring for his country at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
