MANCHESTER UNITED outcast Victor Valdes ‘wants to prove he’s not dead’ after joining Standard Liege on loan.
Valdes joined United in January 2015 from Barcelona, but made just two appearances for the club.
His lack of appearances was largely down to the Spain international being involved in a pre-season bust up with boss Louis van Gaal.
This resulted in the 34-year-old being frozen out of the United first-team and forced to train in his own after reportedly refusing to play with the reserves.
However, Valdes has been able to end his Old Trafford nightmare by joining Liege, which manager Yannick Ferrera is delighted about after insisting Valdes is still good enough to break back into the Spain national side.
“From what I’ve seen he’s very good to play now. You barely notice that he’s been out for a while,” Ferrera told Spanish newspaper Marca.
“If tomorrow there was a match, he would [play]. He has been training at a high level these days and will provide the expertise we need in that position.
“I have found an exceptional professional. An hour before the session, he is preparing to train.
“He wants to prove he’s not dead. He has years of football. And, although I have not spoken to him, I don’t understand why he would not be able to go with the Spanish team to the European Championship. I do not know if he will have that goal, but I encourage him.”
