MANCHESTER UNITED cancelled training sessions on Sunday and Monday as the uncertainty over Louis van Gaal's future rumbles on.
United lost to Southampton on Saturday with Charlie Austin's 87th minute debut goal.
Van Gaal has travelled home to Holland in the wake of the defeat for his daughter's birthday.
The Daily Mail claim that Van Gaal told players and staff not to report to Carrington on Sunday for post-game drills - and that Monday's training day was also postponed.
“I’m very disappointed I cannot reach the expectations of the fans. They have, or they had, great expectations of me, and I cannot fulfil them, so I am very frustrated,” said Van Gaal following the match.
The pressure on Van Gaal has been increased by former chief executive David Gill's comments yesterday.
“Clearly we all hope the results will be better – everyone’s disappointed, I feel as much as non-executive director as a fan,” Gill told the BBC.
“This is undoubtedly a season of underachievement. I think everyone would agree with that given the investment that was made.
"Everyone there is working extremely hard to turn that round. It’s not easy.”
And now the Dutchman's future is being discussed in the club's boardrooms once more.
Senior players are believed to have called on the board to dismiss the manager with Jose Mourinho and Ryan Giggs the only two viable candidates to take over.
