The Belgium star was taken off on a stretcher after a collision with Ramiro Funes Mori late on in the Capital One Cup semi final.
De Bruyne had come on as a sub, scored the controversial equaliser and then set up Sergio Aguero's winner.
But the tangle with Funes Mori appears to have cost him his chance of playing in the final and in crucial Champions League fixtures next month.

"I spoke with him earlier and he's a little bit sad because he's got a tear in the ankle and in the lateral in his knee ligaments," his agent Patrick De Koster told Sky Sports.
"For sure he will need six weeks rehabilitation. But he is going to do more medicals today. I think on Friday morning will have more news for when he can play again.
"He wants to play football and he will miss important games - the final and Champions League games. It's something that can arrive in football and the only thing to do is work hard and come back."

De Bruyne, who cost £54million, has scored 12 times this season and has 12 assists.
He could now miss 12 matches including the Manchester derby on March 20.
At the time Manuel Pellegrini said he hopes the injury wouldn't be too bad.
Pellegrini said: "I hope not. It is very difficult to know in this moment but I am optimistic he will not be out for the rest of the season. It is not a cruciate ligament, it is the medial ligament.

"I always said Kevin is a very important player in the whole season. He didn't start because we have to play nine games in 27 days. I think it is important to have a very good rotation of the squad."
Joel Robles grabbed his arm when he was on the floor and tried to pull him up but later apologised.
"I would like to apologise to Kevin De Bruyne for my reaction to his injury," he said on Twitter. "In the heat of the moment I didn't realise he was badly hurt.
"I wish him all the best and a speedy recovery."
