FORMER Liverpool midfielder Jason McAteer has questioned Jurgen Klopp's decision not to start Lucas in last night's 3-3 draw with Arsenal.
The Brazilian was left on the bench as the two sides played out a thrilling encounter at Anfield.
Captain Jordan Henderson was restored to the starting line up in place of Lucas, playing alongside Emre Can.
And McAteer feels, the absence of Lucas left Liverpool's defence exposed against Arsenal's attacking talents.
He said: “We do play these two defensive midfielders sitting in front of the back four to give us a little bit more cover.
“Tonight we went with Henderson and Can, who are attack minded. But playing in that defensive position maybe Lucas might have been suited better.
“There were a few times when we thought Lucas would have been there when Can made a run forward, the ball has gone through him or Henderson made a run forward or they both broke.
“And they leave the back four exposed at times, you can’t do that against an Arsenal team that has got runners like [Mesut] Ozil, [Theo] Walcott and [Aaron] Ramsey.
“They will punish you, they will get into good areas; and that’s what happened at times tonight, the back four was left exposed.
“It’s something to work on, maybe Lucas should have started.”
