MANCHESTER UNITED are set to recall Sam Johnstone from his loan spell at Preston.
The injury-prone 22-year-old faces months on the sidelines after suffering yet another setback.
Preston wanted to sign Johnstone permanently from United but the Red Devils rejected a move.
And in light of his fresh injury the Manchester Evening News claim the shot-stopper has been recalled from his loan spell.
Preston boss Simon Grayson has now moved for former United keeper Anders Lindegaard on loan from West Brom, but admits it is a 'shame' to see Johnstone return to Old Trafford.
“We got told on Thursday night by Manchester United that there was no way we could anything with Sam in terms of a loan signing," Grayson said.
"We tried to buy him but they said no to that, too.
"With some of the contacts we have, we made enquiries and we were really pleased that Tony Pulis at West Brom agreed to let Anders come to us for the rest of the season.
“We had to protect ourselves as a club to make sure we had another goalkeeping option. It is a shame that Sam is going back, he is a fantastic keeper who we would love to have at the club.
Johnstone made his final appearance for Preston in the 3-1 defeat to Brentford on Saturday.
