LAURNET KOSCIELNY was the unlikely hero as Arsenal kicked off 2016 with a precious three points.

A poked effort from the French centre back 18 minutes from time broke Newcastle's resistance.
The visitors however warmed to the task quickly in the first half.
Petr Cech was forced into action in the 18th minute when he pushed out Gini Wijnaldum's glancing header.
 
The Magpies were on top, but continually found a barrier in Cech.
Arsenal were stuck for ideas and it took until the 70th minute for Arsene Wenger to make the change - bringing on Joel Campbell for Alex Oxlade Chamberlain.

Two minutes later, the Gunners were ahead when Koscielny escaped the attentions of Ayoze Perez from a corner before stabbing home from an Olivier Giroud knock-on.
Aaron Ramsey nearly added a second late on, but Arsenal were able to cement top spot after Leicester were held to a goalless draw.
