WEST HAM co-chairman David Sullivan has admitted they came within two hours of appointing Rafa Benitez and also tried to get Jurgen Klopp.

Revealed: How West Ham attempted to bring Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp to Upton Park
Jurgen Klopp rejected the West Ham job before joining Liverpool

Sam Allardyce left Upton Park at the start of the summer after four years at the club and Sullivan set his sights high in terms of a replacement.
Eventually Slaven Bilic was appointed manager but not before a major effort to bring Benitez and later Klopp to the club.

"It’s common knowledge we tried to get a very high level manager with vast experience," he told Sky Sports News.
"One of them had agreed everything with us then Real Madrid came in. Then we went to the best of the rest and Slaven was the best of the rest.

"We were two hours from getting Rafa Benitez, everything was agreed. We tried Klopp as well but at the time he wanted a break.
"We aimed very, very high and I’m glad with the manger we got."
After turning down the Hammers, Benitez became manager of Real Madrid while Klopp joined Liverpool after Brendan Rodgers was sacked in October.
