The Dutchman, prior to completing his badges, visited Southampton boss Ronald Koeman and was inspired by him to make a return to England where he shone as a player.
Stam spent just over three seasons at Old Trafford and is regarded as one of the best defenders they have ever had.
Now a coach at Ajax's reserves, the 43-year-old wants to take that next step into management.

Stam said: “As soon as I get the opportunity to work in England, I will go for it."
Fulham sacked Kit Symons in early November after just over a year at the helm and have put Stuart Gray in temporary charge as they look for a new manager.
Stam is currently 17/1 with bookmakers Betfair to become the next permanent manager of Fulham.
