The Japanese sensation has shot to the top of Louis van Gaal's winter sales list after impressing for German side Mainz.
The 23-year-old has hit seven times in the Bundesliga - in 17 appearances - after making a summer move from J. League side FC Tokyo.
According to the Daily Star Muto has been watched on several occasions already by United scouts and comes recommended by Sir Alex Ferguson.
United have struggled in front of goal this season, scoring just 22 times in 17 games so far in the Premier League.
Wayne Rooney - who has been dropped to the bench for today's game with Stoke - has scored just twice in the league while summer signing Anthony Martial has four after an initial flurry.

Van Gaal is on the brink of being sacked after going six games without a win and could even face the axe if they don't beat Stoke this afternoon.
Jose Mourinho has been lined up to replace him while assistant manager Ryan Giggs is also being considered.
But a move to bring £15million-rated Muto in shows Van Gaal believes he can still fix the problems at the club.
