Coutinho went off with a hamstring complaint that has now kept him out for nearly a fortnight |
PHILIPPE COUTINHO will not play against Newcastle as he has failed to recover from a hamstring problem sustained against Manchester City.
The Brazilian has been one of Jurgen Klopp's best players so far at Liverpool, having scored at the Etihad before limping off injured.
The 23-year-old, who was signed from Inter Milan in January 2013, was expected to play against Southampton in the Capital One Cup in midweek.
He was unable to line up for the Reds, although it didn't seem to hinder Jurgen Klopp's outfit as they ran out 6-1 winners at St Mary's, thanks to a hattrick from Divock Origi.
And with Coutinho failing even to travel ahead of today's game, Origi will be eyeing a chance to showcase his skills in the Premier League.
It is not clear how long Origi's opportunity may last though, as Coutinhowill now continue to have treatment on his injured hamstring, with Liverpool's clash with West Brom at Anfield on December 13 a target for a return.
Klopp has also received some good news from the treatment room however, as Kolo Toure, who picked up a knock on the knee in training, travelled with the squad to the north east.
Had Toure remained in Liverpool, the German manager would have only had two fit senior centre backs at his disposal, in the shape of Martin Skrtel and Dejan Lovren, with Mamadou Sakho and Joe Gomez both already out with long-term knee injuries.
