The former Chelsea boss has been linked with the United job in recent weeks, given the club's poor run of form which now extends to four straight defeats.
The bookies have the Portuguese as the favourite to take the helm at Old Trafford should the Dutchman be given the boot before the New Year.
And News News Blog Sport understands that's more than likely, especially if he loses to Chelsea this afternoon (5.30pm).
However, according to The Telegraph, Mourinho is more than just the odds-on favourite and has been keeping tabs on the United top job.
It's claimed he would prefer a move to Manchester, rather than a return to the Bernabeu, where he is also being touted as Rafa Benitez's successor.
Although, it's understood his family are not keen on a return to Madrid and Mourinho is known to have disliked the politics surrounding the manager’s role at Real.
The Portuguese has made clear his intentions to jump straight back into management, providing the right opportunity arises.
And in a statement released by his representatives CAA in the aftermath of his sacking, it claimed he was 'not tired' and would 'not be taking a sabbatical'.
