ROMAN ABRAMOVICH was left with no choice but to sack Jose Mourinho.
That is the verdict of former Liverpool defender turned Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher.
Mourinho and Chelsea parted company earlier today after a disastrous season that sees the reigning champions in 16th spot in the Premier League table, just a point above the relegation zone.
Reports had suggested of simmering tensions inside the dressing room, and Abramovich decided to act.
Carragher is in no doubt Mourinho ‘hung the players out to dry’ and is convinced Abramovich had no other choice but to fire the Portuguese tactician.
“I don't think they've made a mistake,” Carragher told Sky Sports.
“I’m a massive fan of Jose Mourinho, but the way the results were going couldn't continue for a team that's had so much success under an owner whose very trigger happy. So something had to change.
“The results have been really poor, but [Abramovich] has maybe given him a bit longer than he gave previous managers.
"So though it is sad to see him leave the Premier League, it was the only decision to be made really."
