Jack Butland doesn't want to miss out on the chance to shake hands with Stoke legend Gordon Banks |
JACK BUTLAND has not allowed much to beat him this season but he has let two chances to finally shake hands with one of his goalkeeping heroes, club legend Gordon Banks, slip through his grasp.
England World Cup-winner Banks was present at the Chelsea Carling Cup penalty shoot-out match and was keen to meet the youngster only for the message to be relayed to Butland once he had gone.
The pair then arranged to meet after the Sheffield Wednesday match this week only for Banks, 77, to leave early on account of feeling unwell.
Now Butland says he does not intend to let the chance slip through his grasp a third time.
"Hopefully I'll get to have a good chat with him soon because he's someone who's a massive part of Stoke and England's history," he said. "It is an honour to be even mentioned in the same sentence as him.
"I would love to speak to him so I hope we can sort it out - it would be great to meet him."
Banks and Butland share Stoke's club record for consecutive clean sheets on the road |
The pair share the club record for consecutive clean sheets on the road having achieved a shut-out in five games each.
Banks withstood all-comers for 551 minutes without conceding away back in 1969-70 and Butland went five matches in League and Cup without conceding before their defeat at Sunderland, a run stretching back to September.
Banks still holds bragging rights for now though, having amassed 73 caps with England between 1963-72, a World Cup and two League Cup wins, one with Leicester in 1964 and the second with Stoke in 1972.
