HARRY KANE has broken Teddy Sheringham's club record for goals in a calendar year and joked he is still chasing down Lionel Messi's European tally.

Harry Kane targets Lionel Messi record at Watford after Tottenham thrash Norwich
Harry Kane broke a Tottenham record held by former Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham

But when Big Ben chimes to mark the start of the New Year, his resolution for 2016 is to land trophies not records after the most amazing 12 months of his career. And he is not talking about Young Player of the Year baubles.
Kane was in bed asleep when 2015 arrived, but the New Year was only a few hours old when his hat-trick in a 5-3 win against Chelsea made the world sit up and take notice.
Now there remains only today's trip to Watford of a year that has seen Kane rattle in 32 goals for club and country - 27 in the Premier League for Spurs - culminating in the brace he notched against Norwich before Tom Carroll added a late flourish.

Sheringham scored 26 Premier League goals in 2002 while Messi's tally this season for Barcelona and Argentina is an incredible 51 - something Kane joked about on Twitter earlier this week.
"That's good, that's good to hear," he said when told Sheringham's record had fallen. "Yeah, 19 against Watford would be lovely," he added when Messi was mentioned.
"I try not to think about too many records but to hear stuff like that shows I'm doing well so it's great to hear and hopefully I can go on to break even more records next year.

"I don't really make New Year's resolutions. For me I just try to keep improving day in day out. Next year I want to be even better, I want to score even more goals. This year's been good so next year the aim is to keep getting better, keep working hard and hopefully keep working forward.
"And a trophy is always the aim for me. It isn't about personal records or personal trophies. It's about team trophies and winning honours.
"We're in a great position at the moment and if 2016 brings a trophy, for club or country, that would be amazing, and that's always the aim for me, to win trophies."
The final journey of the season will be an emotional one as it was at Watford that Kane first tried to prove himself - to no avail.

"I was there for a four to six-week trial before I went to Spurs. I live in Chingford, which is probably only half-an-hour from Watford, so I'm quite local. But I would have been very young at that stage."
Watford might be kicking themselves harder if they were not doing so well - they were expected to face the same sort of relegation torment Saturday's opponents Norwich are experiencing.
A home game for the Canaries against bottom-of-the-table Aston Villa today could help ease those worries.

"All the games are important," skipper Russ Martin said. "A result here would have taken some pressure off. But the Villa game was going to be big because of where both teams are.
"We are looking onwards and upwards. We didn't move the ball quick enough on Saturday and didn't have enough tempo. They didn't have too many clear cut chances but we move on.
"Now it's a great chance to pull further away from them. It's a chance we have to take. We are at home in front of our own fans. If we get 20 points at the halfway mark then everyone can be fairly pleased."
