MANCHESTER UNITED goalkeeper Joel Castro Pereira has returned to Old Trafford after a loan spell at Rochdale.
The 21-year-old moved to Spotland in mid-October on an initial one-month deal, but that was extended and he made his Football League debut in a 2-0 win over Doncaster in November.
Castro Pereira had been due to stay at the club until January 3, but has been recalled by United before the New Year.
It is unlikely the 19-year-old will be challenging David De Gea for the No 1 shirt at Old Trafford any time soon.
However, his early recall suggests he will be looking to climb up the pecking order alongside Sergio Romero and Sam Johnstone with Victor Valdes exiled from the first team squad.
Castro Pereira, who has appeared at youth level for Switzerland but most recent Portugal, made eight appearances for Rochdale, who paid tribute to his services on the club website.
A statement said: “We'd like to thank Joel for his efforts and his contribution, as well as wishing him the very best of luck for the future.”
