ARSENE WENGER has scotched rumours that Jack Wilshere could be a doubt for England’s European Championships campaign, insisting the midfielder will be back in action before the end of February.
Recovery from a leg injury has been slower than expected. He picked up the problem during the build up to the Community Shield game against Chelsea in August and initially the prognosis was that he would only be out for “days”.
However, Wilshere failed to respond to treatment and the decision was for the 23-year-old to undergo surgery in September.
Initial reports on the success of the operation were positive, but frustratingly Wenger had to admit last week that progress had not been as good as had been expected.
However, talk of him being ruled out till the summer was wide of the mark, the Arsenal manager insisted.
“I maintain what I said that he could make it back for February or even earlier,” he said. “He will be available again. Considering you play the Euros on June 10, that is a long way.”
Over the shorter term, Wenger intends to continue his policy of rotation to manage the injury situation with his other midfielders over the hectic festive period.
“Certainly we will rotate again,” he said. Mathieu Flamini has a chance to come back and I think Alexis Sanchez is a bit short. Alexis will be back in one week, maybe against Sunderland. Everybody else in the squad against Bournemouth should be available.”
