As the investigation took shape it was clear that this was a gangland killing – one that has become one of the most infamous gangland murders in British history – the murder of the notorious Essex Boys. When the original Essex Boys’ reign of fear came to a brutal end in Rettendon, there was a void. The police feared a brutal turf war – and they were right. The new generation of Essex Boys was led by Malcolm Walsh, a man with a fearsome reputation who took no prisoners.Along with partners Damon Alvin, Ricky Percival and Steve ‘Nipper’ Ellis, Walsh swiftly formed the ultimate Essex firm.
The subsequent turf war led to yet more bloody violence and gangland executions, adding to the myths, lies and injustices. In the following blood-drenched years, Ricky Percival was convicted and jailed for the murder of Dean Boshell and the attempted murders of members of the Tretton family.Likewise, Kevin Walsh was found guilty and jailed for perverting the course of justice after providing an alibi for Ricky Percival during his trial for murder. The hard-hitting documentary features extraordinary contributions from the people at the heart of Essex gangland like Steve ‘Nipper’ Ellis who was a suspect in the murders of Tate, Tucker and Rolfe and a friend of Ricky Percival.Billy and Eddie Blundell, allegedly two of the most notorious and powerful villains in Essex and often cited as being more dangerous than the Kray twins, also give their side of the story.

The resulting criminal inquiries over the years have been seen by some onlookers as evidence of dubious police practice and colossal judicial incompetence which first saw Darren Nicholls and then nine years later, Damon Alvin, turn supergrass against their former partners. This highly contentious police tactic led to the only instance in UK legal history where a man charged with murder became a witness for both the defence and prosecution in that same murder case. Many people still believe to this day that the wrong men went to prison. In the documentary, John Whomes, the brother ofJack Whomes (who was convicted and jailed for the murders of Tate, Tucker and Rolfe) speaks out, maintaining that his brother is innocent. John continues to campaign for Jack's release to this day.
The documentary also features Adele O’Connor.O'Connor ran the brothel owned by murdered Essex Boys members Tony Tucker and Pat Tate.In extremely harrowing scenes, Jenny Dickinson is featured on an audio recording only.Dickinson was present and injured during the gangland shooting at the Tretton family home for which Ricky Percival was given three life sentences.
The fim is narrated by former Essex Boy firm member Bernard O’Mahoney.Mahoney insists that he knows the real story of what happened on that terrible night in 1985 and the ensuing fallout. With his book and the new documentary he says that he wants to put to rest the ghosts of those violent years, to see justice served for all and finally, to open the way for the truth to come out.Essex Boys: The Truth is out in UK cinemas and On Demand from December 6An Amazon Exclusive DVD and eBook release of Essex Boys: The Final Word: No More Myths, No More Lies - The Definitive Story is out on December 14 Essex Boys: The Truth is out on general release DVD on January 4, 2016
