CRISTIANO RONALDO is unhappy at Real Madrid and playing under protest, according to their former manager Jorge Valdano.
Ronaldo's future has been the subject of intense speculation, with a return to Manchester United apparently not out of the question.
United manager Louis van Gaal was reported to be interested in bringing him back to Old Trafford in the summer and the player himself has refused to rule it out.
With two years remaining on his contract at the Bernabeu, Ronaldo insists he has no idea what the future holds.
The 30-year-old even refused to rule out a move to Chelsea to link up with Jose Mourinho again.
And Valdano thinks this might be a result of being played out of position at the La Liga giants.
“Ronaldo would prefer to be playing out on the left, as he always has done," he said.
“It's difficult to know if it's because he's not been scoring or because of the position, but he's not enjoying playing at the moment.
"He's playing under protest.”
Talk of a falling out with team-mate Gareth Bale has hardly helped the Portuguese star's situation in Spain.
Both are are seemingly jostling for centre stage in the Spanish capital.
Bale's agent Jonathan Barnett fuelled the war of words, insisting his client was the best player in the world and Ronaldo was nothing more than an "underwear seller".
Real manager Rafa Benitez was forced to step in and stop the feud but Ronaldo's future remains unclear still.
