Real Madrid were handed a 4-0 drubbing by Barcelona |
GARETH BALE has urged Real Madrid to let him earn his Spurs as he believes he can help the club back from their 4-0 humiliation by Barcelona on Saturday by returning to a more central role.
A chorus of boos after the home hammering has put pressure on the head not only of manager Rafa Benitez and Florentino Perez. There is also renewed speculation about Cristiano Ronaldo making an emotional return to Manchester United.
Bale was a peripheral figure in El Clasico, playing wide on the right as Benitez tried to incorporate all his attacking options.
However, in four games before picking up a calf-strain at the start of the season, Bale played in the no. 10 position. Real scored 15 goals in three wins and a draw.
Now the ambassador for BT Sport feels a return to that system could kick-start the season.
“Rafa and I had conversations at the start of the season,” Bale said. “Obviously he’s seen me playing for Tottenham.
“We didn’t have that middle free role in the last system with Carlo Ancelotti, but this year the system suits my style of play, and where I want to play.
Bale has been playing through the middle for Wales and for Real |
“I feel like that’s my position. In my last season at Tottenham, I played in the middle more. From then, and for Wales, I’ve been playing in the centre.
“It means I can drift into areas, find the space, and when I get the ball I can attack. It’s my best position, and when I’m fit, it’ll be a great season.”
