Andros Townsend has warned Luke Shaw not to be tempted by TV work during Euro 2016 |
ANDROS TOWNSEND has warned Luke Shaw to forget about following in his footsteps by working as a pundit for Euro 2016.
The injured Manchester United left-back has almost no chance of going as an England player and Townsend knows just how hard it can be to miss out on a major tournament.
The 24-year-old was an influential figure during Engalnd's qualification campaign for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
However, he was ruled out of the main event because of injury and went to South America to work on TV instead.
Shaw, 20, will no doubt have similar offers but Townsend has warned his international team-mate it is a bad idea and urged him not to follow suit.
"There is no bigger disappointment than missing out through injury and I feel for Luke," Townsend told The Daily Mail.
"He was having a fantastic season and was one of the best English players in the Premier League so it's going to be difficult for him – I won't lie.
"It was harder than I thought for me. Beforehand I thought it would be alright, but once I was there and the tournament was going on it was incredibly difficult to handle.
"Being there as a pundit made it worse, being that close but not being involved.
Luke Shaw is almost certain to miss Euro 2016 after suffering a double leg-break |
"He has time on his side, he's only 20 so there will be plenty of other tournaments for him and he should take that positive from a negative situation.
"He's Man United's first-choice left back and I am sure he'll be alright."
