Ronald Koeman has his sights set on the Capital One Cup final |
SOUTHAMPTON manager Ronald Koeman believes his side have shown they have what it takes to lift the Capital One Cup this season.
Saints beat Aston Villa 2-1 at St Mary's in round four last night to set up a quarter-final showdown with Liverpool.
Koeman's men have already held the Reds at Anfield this season and beat Chelsea in their own backyard.
Koeman's side will host Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool in the quarter-final |
And while the Dutchman concedes Manchester City - who beat Crystal Palace 5-1 - are favourites to win the tournament, he is certain his team can mix it with the best after his side's exploits at Stamford Bridge earlier this month.
“You know it’s difficult because I think everybody takes it seriously," he said.
“If I watch yesterday the happiness of the fans when the teams are winning by penalties and the players I think it’s an honour to play at Wembley and to play for a title.
“Ok, if you are a player of Man City then of course you have more possibilities to win but we showed already that we can beat the big ones.
“You have to be a little bit lucky in the draw but it’s one of our ambitions to reach the final and to give our amazing fans the opportunity to go to Wembley and to play for something.
“I think that’s what every player, what every manager, likes to do, to go to Wembley and fight for a trophy, even the Capital One.
“For us it’s an important one.”
