Officials rounded up and killed 86 dogs in their first swoop |
DOG owners have been left heartbroken after officials snatched and killed their pets in case they offended tourists.
Village elders decided that dogs and pigs did not fit in with the image of Shiyan in China's eastern Zhejiang Province.
They ordered for all of the animals to be killed – and now most have ended up as dinner at the local OAP home.
But when dog catchers swooped on the area and slaughtered 86 pooches, one lucky dog escaped to the mountains.
Village secretary Chen Baochang claimed the shock move had been supported by 76 village committee members and they were worried about tourists being bitten.
Shiyan is a popular tourist destination and gets thousands of visitors every week |
But he admitted that there had never been an incident where a stray dog had bitten anyone.
He also denied that they were trying to drive out all animals, saying chickens, ducks, geese, rabbits, goats, and cows were still allowed.
It is not known if officials will come for Wang Wang again |
This is thought to be the last surviving dog in the area |
Chinese state media confirmed that the killed animals had been sent off to OAP homes to be made into lunch, and that the only dog now remaining belonged to a man whose surname was Chen.
They said that Chen owns a mixed-breed dog named "Wang Wang" who had run off when inspectors tried to grab him.
After hiding in the mountains, the dog had returned home the next day, and since then he has spent all of his time hiding in the man's property.
It is unclear if inspectors will try to grab Wang Wang again, but it was confirmed he was the last dog left in the village.
