Tensions between Liverpool and the Football Association have been further inflamed after Jordan Rossiter reported a hamstring injury after playing three games in five days for England U19s.
Rossiter, 18, will not now feature in Liverpool’s squad for tomorrow’s trip to Tottenham which is manager Jurgen Klopp’s first match in charge.
Relations between Liverpool and the FA have been simmering ever since Daniel Sturridge pulled up injured in a training session under senior England coach Roy Hodgson with a thigh injury which triggered a catalogue of problems.
The midfielder played against Macedonia, Finland and Italy as Aidy Boothroyd’s side progressed to the elite phase of the in the European U19 Championships.
Liverpool believe the injury has been caused by playing too many games in such a short space of time and it follows the setback suffered by Joe Gomez while playing for the U21s on Tuesday.
Gomez is out for the season after scans revealed he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in a win over Kazakhstan.
U21s coach Gareth Southgate said at the time that the injury was not serious and subsequently released a statement expressing his shock at the severity of the injury.
