Jose Mourinho took a sarcastic swipe at the FA after branding referee Damir Skomina 'weak and naive' |
JOSE MOURINHO took a sarcastic swipe at the FA last night as he described Slovenian referee Damir Skomina as "weak and naive" for denying his Chelsea side a penalty in Kiev.
Chelsea ground out a valuable Champions League point with a vastly improved performance in the Ukraine which saw man of the match Eden Hazard and Willian both hit the woodwork.
But Chelsea could have won the game, especially when Cesc Fabregas was felled in the area in the first half - and Skomina waved play on.
Mourino is appealing a £50,000 FA fine plus a one year suspended stadium ban for saying referees in England are afraid to give his team penalties.
Skomina was criticised by Mourinho for waving away a penalty appeal from Cesc Fabregas |
One of his defences was that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger had called referee Mike Dean "weak and naive" and was not punished. Last night's comment was a clear reference to that decision - but as this was a Uefa game Mourinho is safe from punishment.
The Chelsea manager said: "The referee was weak and naïve. It was a big penalty. "I still do not understand what official behind the goal does. Because he doesn't make a clear decision.
"When the result is zero-zero and such a penalty is not given it's a crucial moment in the game.
"The first thing a person who goes to football as a player or a coach does is to study the rules, and the rules are the same for everybody. Handball is a penalty. A foul in the box is a penalty.
"I thought the referee was very good. But he made one mistake. It was like in the rugby World Cup, I think the referee in the Scotland game against Australia was very good - but made one mistake. And that mistake cost Scotland their chance."
The Chelsea manager, whose team recorded their second clean sheet in a row after the 2-0 win over Aston Villa, said: "We are recovering some of our compactness, solidarity, effort and tactical discipline. Those qualities are very important when you are not flying, scoring goals or playing with confidence or flair. So in three days, two solid performances are good for us.
"We hit the post twice, we had a great chance for Nemanja Matic, and a solid defensive performance against a dangerous team. "To lose this game would have been really bad for us. But it was a good performance, with everybody fighting for each other.
"Once more it was a game without luck for us , because with a bit of luck you win this game. But it's okay. We have our destiny in our hands."
