Give your skin a boost with advice from our resident skincare experts |
Each week our experts Dr Aamer Khan and Lesley Reynolds bring you the latest beauty news and anti-ageing advice.
Paper-thin crepey skin is one of the most common problems we’re asked about in the clinic. It is a very difficult sign of ageing to prevent because it has so many different causes and can occur all over the body. Sun damage is the main culprit but pollution, smoking and rapid weight loss all contribute too.
Hormonal changes that occur before the menopause cause a decline in the production of collagen and elastin, adding to the problem. It’s difficult to treat as once skin has thinned it can be hard to add thickness again. However there are treatments which can smoothe and soften.

* Microneedling
* Microneedling
A hand roller covered with hundreds of very fine needles is used to puncture the skin, leaving tiny pinpricks. This activates a wound heal response which boosts collagen levels and thickens the skin. The skin is cleansed and a peptide serum is massaged over the face.
The roller is moved over the skin, helping the serum to penetrate into the deeper layers. An antioxidant serum is then applied. The treatment can be slightly uncomfortable and feels like being massaged with a pin cushion. No recovery time is needed and skin will look plump and dewy after one treatment.
Results last up to six weeks. A course of six, one every two to three weeks, is recommended. Price: From £250 per treatment.

* The skin toner
This advanced radio frequency treatment is good for the face, around the eyes and the decolletage. It targets uneven skin tone and crepiness and helps firm and tighten skin. A handheld device delivers radio frequency energy into the skin, creating tiny pinprick holes that the body naturally repairs.

Skin is cleansed before three different handheld devices are used. The first device targets age spots and pigmentation marks, the second stimulates collagen growth and softens lines while the last resurfaces to improve skin elasticity.

AT HOME* Stop smoking
Smoking accelerates skin ageing as it creates enzymes that damage collagen levels, causing the telltale sagging and crepey skin seen in smokers.
* Sun safe
Failing to protect your skin on a daily basis is the prime cause of collagen loss. Make sure you wear an SPF30 broad-spectrum cream that prevents damage from UVA and UVB rays every day.
* Dream cream
Ask a dermatologist to prescribe a retinoid cream for you. They are the gold standard for skin rejuvenation as they boost collagen levels and keep the skin looking plump and healthy.
