The Taken King needs to deliver a decent story for Destiny fans, Bungie |
There is no doubt that Destiny has an enduring draw that has helped it sustain a dedicated usership on the PlayStation and Xbox platforms.
By itself, it doesn't all that impressive but if you think of some of the negativity that surrounded the title after launch and how some fans reacted to the price of the first DLC, The Dark Below, you start to realise that Destiny has weathered some serious storms.
If you go back to 2014, the size of anticaptation and eventual success can be fully appreciated.

However, some fans were underwhelmed by the storyline and picked holes in the cutscenes and were further annoyed by the feeling that The Dark Below reused too much from the original title.House of Wolves was warmly received in comparison, adding the Trials of Osiris and Prison of Elders endgames but dropping the Raid finale.
Back in May Activision confirmed that Destiny had 16m registered users to date, it doesn't cover how many copies were sold but it does make it clear that people are playing.
"Combined (Hearthstone and Destiny), these franchises attracted over 40 million registered players worldwide and generated more than $850 million in non?GAAP revenue," said Kotick.
And with September's Taken King rolling up, the top-selling new IP in video game history is looking good to carry on expanding.
It appears Bungie are learning from each DLC, the studio goes to great lengths to say they're listening to the fans and while will have to wait to see how the Taken King's story runs, the new Mayhem and Rift games look set to be a hit with fans.
One fan gave their feedback on Mayhem, saying: "Playing Mayhem is literally the most fun I've had in crucible since the beta, please do not ruin it like you tend to do with most of the best parts of Destiny.
"In other words, Mayhem is perfect. Please never change it!"

What's important with The Taken King is that it not only delivers with the updated Crucible but that the story gets a much-need boost.The former DLCs have barely touched on expanding the story, but going into Year Two fans will need something to sustain them for the next few months.
If the guys at Destiny have actually lived up to listening to fans, they must know that now fans have enough game modes and activities to keep them grinding away, while offering new ways to upgrade and specialise their gear, it's time to fulfill the original promise of an epic space tale.
Without that, Destiny Year Two may get off to a bumpy start.
