Jon Walters celebrating his winner with Shane Long against Georgia in their Euro 2016 qualifier |
JON WALTERS' seventh international goal kept alive the Republic of Ireland’s hopes of qualification as they beat Georgia in Dublin.
The Stoke striker, whose arrival in the country was delayed by a possible deadline-day transfer, fired home from close range in the 69th minute.
It was set up by midfielder Jeff Hendrick’s mazy dribble which took him past three men before his cross was bundled home by Walters.
Victory was no less than the Irish deserved from a vastly improved second-half display and it allowed them to take a firm grip on third place in Group D.
But manager Marrtin O’Neill was dealt a blow when Walters’ Stoke clubmate Glenn Whelan talked himself into a third booking of the campaign.
Substitute James McClean followed suit for a foul within seconds of his arrival, meaning both will now miss Germany’s visit to Dublin next month.
