Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany urged his team-mates to make their mark in Europe |
VINCENT KOMPANY has urged Manchester City to flex their muscles in the Champions League and warned his team-mates they will feel unfulfilled unless they make their mark in Europe.
City will look to begin on the front foot against last season's beaten finalists Juventus as their Group D campaign begins tonight, but must do so without Sergio Aguero who is absent with a knee injury.
The Premier League leaders have yet to progress beyond the last 16 of the competition and captain Kompany knows unless that changes he and his team-mates will be pursued by regrets.
"It is really important [to make a statement] and everything has been so bright and so good for us so far this season," said the defender. "It is the same as what people have been saying for the last three or four years. As long as we don't perform and show our quality in the Champions League as we have in the Premier League there will always be something left behind that leaves us unsatisfied.
"It is a really important game for us. We have been looking forward to the start of the competition since the disappointing game in Barcelona [last season]. This year has to be better."
