James Wilson could leave Manchester United on loan |
Manager Louis van Gaal is prepared to let him leave despite a shortage of strikers but The Manchester Evening News claim he wants to stay put.
Wilson is not allowed to go to a Premier League club after the close of the transfer window but is free to move anywhere in the Football League.
Reports suggest United will retain the option to recall him incase of an injury crisis at Old Trafford.
Van Gaal has already offloaded strikers Radamel Falcao, Robin van Perise and Javier Hernandez this summer.
Adnan Januzaj, who can operate as an out-and-out forward, was also sent on loan to Borussia Dortmund, leaving the club with just three recognised forwards.
That includes Wilson, as well as Wayne Rooney and new boy Anthony Martial, who joined the club for £36million - potentially rising to £58m - on transfer deadline day.
As a result, Wilson is thought to be keen to stay and believes he can force his way into Van Gaal's plans.
The 19-year-old made 17 appearances in the Dutchman's first year at the club and is understood to be thought of as a future star by Van Gaal.
However, he could still leave in the coming days, with the news likely to put numerous Championship clubs on alert.
