Wayne Rooney is expected to be fit for Manchester United's trip to Southampton tomorrow (4pm).
The captain has overcome a hamstring injury and is expected to be available for the trip down south and could partner newboy Anthony Martial.
Phil Jones has recovered from thrombosis but still lacks match fitness so will not feature at St Mary's.
"Rooney is fit to play [against Southampton] and Jones has trained with the group," said Van Gaal.
Ander Herrera has been impressed with Martial since his arrival from Monaco this summer.
The 19-year-old scored on his debut in the Red Devils' 3-1 victory over Liverpool last weekend.
"I think he is a player who has some qualities that the rest haven’t got," Herrera told MUTV.
"So I think he can run into the spaces when the midfielders look forward. We are always going to find him because he’s very quick, very mobile, so I think he is a very good player for us and is going to give us different options."
Frank Lampard has wished Luke Shaw a speedy covery following his double leg fracture that he picked up in the midweek defeat to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League.
"He's a young player, fantastic player, he came out straight away and said his recovery starts here and we're all backing him with that.
"I can only say I hope it makes him stronger and I'm sure it will do. The only benefit I'll say for him, he's got a long time, he's a young kid, he will come back and be a England international and a top Manchester United player for many years to come."
