Louis van Gaal is contracted with Manchester United until 2017 |
The Dutchman guided the Red Devils to a fourth-placed finish in his first season in charge.
His contract currently runs up until 2017.
However, according to the Daily Star, United are in no hurry to open talks over a new deal for Van Gaal.
A club source told the paper: "The manager is enjoying the challenge at the club and is willing to extend his deal to delay his retirement from the game.
"But the fact is he still has to convince bosses he is worth a contract extension.
"He won't be handed one on a plate and it is almost as if he is on trial."
The 64-year-old put pen to paper on a three-year deal worth £6million-a-season when he took over from David Moyes last summer.
