Daniel Sturridge scored a stunning volley as he got back on the scoresheet for Liverpool |
DANIEL STURRIDGE scored twice as Liverpool fought off a late comeback from Aston Villa at Anfield.
Manager Brendan Rodgers has come under huge pressure after his side's poor start to the season and Sturridge's return to form could hardly have come at a better time.
James Milner opened the scoring against his former club with a strike from the edge of the box after just two minutes and they dominated the rest of the first half as Danny Ings also went close.
James Milner opened the scoring in the second minute |
Sturridge gave them some breathing space with a superb second after linking up with Milner before smashing home a stunning volley into the far corner from just inside the box in the 66th minute.
The jubilation was short-lived, however, as a crazy five minute period saw three goals fly in.
Rudy Gestede set up a nervy finish with a towering header |
Rudy Gestede rose highest to nod Villa back in with a shout in the 65th minute but Sturridge restored the two-goal cushion in typically clinical fashion.
Gestede then towered above everyone to power home Jordan Amavi's cross to set up a nervy final 20 minutes.
Sturridge should have had a hat-trick but dragged wide when through on goal, but Rodgers' side held on, much to the relief of the under-pressure boss.
Brendan Rodgers was a relieved man at the final whistle |
