Eric Dier has represented England at youth level |
JAMIE REDKNAPP has tipped Eric Dier to soon earn his first senior international cap.
The Tottenham youngster scored a stunning goal in Tottenham's 4-1 demolition of Manchester City on Saturday and has already represented England at youth level.
Dier played alongside teenager Dele Alli in front of Tottenham's back four as he battled to retain possession from the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Yaya Toure and Raheem Sterling in the middle of the park.
Pochettino has experimented with Dier further forward this year, more so than is usual defensive role among the back-four last season, and so far it seems to be working.
And Redknapp, a former Spurs player himself, believes Roy Hodgson will have to start considering him as a midfielder if he continues performing well.
He is a really intelligent young footballer," he told the Daily Mail.
"He is quick, passes the ball well and knows his limitations — he is happy to do the dirty work and let others take over.
"He has experience of playing in defence but Mauricio Pochettino has been using him in midfield this season and he has been excellent. It is that versatility that makes him such an exciting prospect.
Dier celebrates scoring against Manchester City in Tottenham's 4-1 win |
"He had to deal with some top attacking talent against Manchester City but as his pitch map shows, he was everywhere in the middle and he scored a fine goal.
"Hodgson may have looked at him as a defender but now he is forcing himself into contention as a midfielder, because England haven’t got too many like him."
