David De Gea has signed a new four-year deal |
DENIS IRWIN has backed David De Gea to come straight back into the Manchester United squad.
The 25-year-old put pen to paper on a new deal today, keeping him at Old Trafford for at least four years, with the option of an additional year.
The Red Devils host Liverpool in one of the most important fixtures of the Premier League calendar this Saturday (5.30pm).
And former defender Irwin believes De Gea is mentally strong enough to come back into the side, despite being out in the cold in recent weeks.
He said: "He's a fantastic keeper and Player of the Year for the last two years.
"Mentally, he seems a fairly strong guy to me. A lot of people were questioning him in the first year-and-a-half after he arrived here and he came through that.
"It's down to the manager and we'll see how that pans out. We do know he is a fantastic player and, hopefully, we will see him playing."
