FORMER Aston Villa captain Stiliyan Petrov has confirmed that free agent Dimitar Berbatov is in talks to join the Premier League club.
News News Blog Sport exclusively revealed Berbatov was edging closer to a move to Villa after holding negotiations with the Birmingham-based club in the last few days.
“There were talks but I can’t reveal you anything at the moment,” Petrov replied reporters in Bulgarian capital Sofia when he was asked if he had been involved in a potential Berbatov’s move to Aston Villa.
Petrov, Bulgaria's most capped player, joined Villa from Celtic in 2006 but was forced to retire in 2013 after being diagnosed with leukaemia.
“It’s a nervy period for Berbatov, his agent and Villa and they’ll be the first to announce if there’s something…” Petrov said.
Former Spurs, Manchester United and Fulham striker Berbatov cut short his holiday and will fly to England on Monday for final face to face talks with the Villa bosses.
A source close to the 34-year-old forward, revealed that it’s possible for Berbatov to have a medical on Tuesday or Wednesday if both parties reach an agreement.
Berbatov joined Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen in 2006, and two years later moved to Manchester United for £30.75million.
He said that his priority was to return to England on several occasions.
"It'll be a pleasure [to return to England]," said Berbatov, who joined Monaco in 2014 from Fulham and helped the side reach the Champions League quarter-finals in April.
"I spent a long time in England and I keep very good memories. Everyone is watching the Premier League, and I'll be delighted to return."
Berbatov, who is Bulgaria’s top scorer with 48 goals, attended the christening of his former Bulgaria team mate and close friend Petrov but refused to talk and even threatened a TV reporter to break his camera.
Berbatov is a free agent after leaving Monaco at the end of the season.
The prolific marksman, known for his laid-back nature and silky skills, has also been linked with a move to newly-promoted Bournemouth as they look to add experience and goals to their squad as well as Werder Bremen.
