Karl Robinson fears extra-time could cause injuries in the first round of the Capital One Cup |
KARL ROBINSON has called for extra time to be scrapped in first round Capital One Cup games.
The Milton Keynes Dons boss insists the additional 30 minutes' action so early in the season could harm players.
Robinson's side beat Leyton Orient 2-1 on Tuesday but only avoided extra time with Carl Baker's stoppage-time winner.
Robinson wants games tied in normal time to go straight to penalty shootouts.
He said: "I don't think the first round of this Cup competition should have extra time at a time of the season when no players are physically able to do it.
"If we had gone into extra time we could have lost certain players through fatigue.
"Muscular injuries and predominantly a large percentage of injuries come through fatigue in the latter part of games.
"I was a bit worried about that. We had three players on the pitch who hadn't even played a pre-season game in Sergio Aguza, Cristian Benavente and Matthew Upson."
