The 58-year-old who introduces each act before they take to the stage tweeted: "After the best 11 years with the X Factor, it's time for me to check out and cut loose."

The X Factor veteran's retirement from the show comes as show goes through its biggest changes to date.

The X Fcator's already undergone huge changes in new judges Rita Ora and Nick Grimshaw
Dermot O'Leary has been replaced by Olly Murs and Caroline Flack, who have promised to bring Dermot's trademark dance movies to their debut as main hosts, while Nick Grimshaw and Rita Ora have taken to their new role as judges like water off a duck's back according to Cheryl Fernandez-Versini and boss Simon Cowell.

The Xtra Factor, the X Factor's ITV2 sister show is also seeing some major shakeups with The Saturdays singer Rochelle Humes and Melvin Odoom replacing last year's host Sarah Jane-Crawford who was dropped after just one series.
Peter is yet to announce any plans for his career post-X Factor although with slots on Britain's Got Talent, Live At The Apollo, Family Fortunes and All Star Mr & Mrs, presumably he'll be keeping busy.
Speaking to The Big Issue in 2013, he admitted that the best part of his job is entertaining the nation while remaining relatively anonymous.

He said: "When The X Factor is on more than 100 million people per week hear my voice. Combined with all the radio, TV shows and commercials I do, maybe that’s an underestimation.'
"While my voice is very famous and identifiable, nobody knows what I look like – thank goodness. I couldn’t imagine what it would be like to be really, really famous, living your life in a gilded cage. What an awful price to pay for just doing your job."
The X Factor are yet to announce a replacement but who ever they are, they've got some hefty shoes to fill.
