Manchester City supporters regularly boo the Champions League anthem |
MANCHESTER CITY could face a UEFA punishment after their fans booed the Champions League anthem before their 2-1 win over Sevilla last night.
City fans boo the anthem as a protest against what they feel is harsh treatment by UEFA towards the club.
Match delegate Geir Thorsteinsson, the chairman of the Iceland FA, reported the incident and disciplinary proceedings have now been opened.
The case will be heard in November, when the club are likely to defend the actions of their fans.
City supporters have booed the anthem both home and away for the last two seasons after the club was penalised by UEFA under Financial Fair Play rules, although the sanctions were lifted over a year ago.
They were initially hit with a £50million fine for breaking spending limits.
City fans were not allowed into CSKA Moscow's ground for their Champions League clash last season |
A fan group also protested against UEFA's stadium ban for an away trip to CSKA Moscow last year, after it emerged that 650 home fans were allowed into the Khimki Arena.
No City fans were granted access to the clash, despite it being CSKA who were handed the sanction as punishment for a series of offences including racist chanting.
