DIDIER DROGBA is set to return to Chelsea after informing Montreal Impact of his decision to retire from football.
The Blues legend is now in line to join Guus Hiddink's back room staff.
The Dutchman replaced Jose Mourinho last month and admitted he wanted Drogba involved at Stamford Bridge.
They sat together during the win over Sunderland hours after Hiddink had been announced as the interim boss.
Hiddink said: "A few days ago before the Sunderland game I said that those rare kind of former players with this status would be very good for any club to have.
"Especially him because he's a Chelsea legend, but for the moment we have to respect his contract with Montreal.
"It depends on the player himself, you need to give them time and opportunities to find out what the best is for them.
"It may be on the coaching staff or maybe as an ambassador, but that is too official and functional for me. They need to go into the squad and help players with their experience."
And reports in France - from L'Equipe - say Drogba has retired from playing.
Drogba, who scored 164 goals in 381 appearances, won the Champions League with his final kick the first time he left Chelsea in 2012.
He then returned under Mourinho to help the club clinch the title last term.
