ANIMAL Crossing: Happy Home Designer is an interior design simulator for the Nintendo 3DS. The genre of design simulators have had a long history of being shovelware on the original Nintendo DS. The dual screen and use of a stylus have allowed these games to flourish.
The game does not feel or play like a design sim that has the Animal Crossing brand attached to it, it is very much an Animal Crossing game. It has the great resonance of charm and simplistic delight that has endeared fans to the series with the artwork, graphics and music working together.
The game has integration with each Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival with houses designed in Happy Home Designer appearing in Amiibo Festival.
Happy Home Designer works with the new Animal Crossing Amiibo cards. These come bundled in small packs and are cheaper than Nintendo's model amiibo.
There are over a 100 cards to collect and like with any card purchases, there is no guarantee on getting the cards you want. They can be used to unlock design requests from the villagers depicted on the cards, and they also can be used to view rooms that the player has designed for them.
However, I never felt that there was need to get these cards at the start of the game. If you are a fan of the game and want to play more then these are great. But they are not a must have purchase. The game is also compatible with the Villager Amiibo, to unlock a special bonus. The game also uses introduces card amiibo for the first time.
The controls and interface for creation of the rooms are put together masterfully with the menu system allowing users to flow through all possible options. The touch screen on the Nintendo 3DS is used as a floor planner to move items around a room with precision. If they had not succeeded at this, the game would be an absolute failure as their is very little to do outside of designing homes.
Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer is great at being an interior design simulator, but nothing else. There is a lot of freedom but no sense of reward in completing a room. The game is an impressive expansion of the original home customisation elements of Animal Crossing, but you will have a better time playing one of the Animal Crossing games.
